These are the people fans of Utah Opera are gong to meet next season: Bohemians in Paris, a space-going young prince, an amorous barber, and an Egyptian woman choosing between love and the convent.
Utah Opera announced its 2023-2024 season on Tuesday evening. It’s a season, said Steve Brosvik, president and CEO of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera, that “not only offers the universal theme of love, but it does so with works that are so well loved themselves — and frequently requested — by Utah audiences.”
All of the operas will be performed at the Capitol Theatre, 50 W. 200 South, Salt Lake City. Season subscriptions can be bought over the USUO mobile app, online at UtahOpera.org, or by calling USUO’s patron services, at 801-533-NOTE (6683). Individual tickets will go on sale in August.
Here are the four productions scheduled for Utah Opera’s 2023-2024 season:
• “La bohéme,” Oct. 7-15 • Composer Giacomo Puccini’s tale of four Bohemians in Paris — a poet, a painter, a musician and a philosopher — whose lives are changed one freezing night, with the arrival of the sickly neighbor Mimi. Conducted by Robert Tweten and directed by Garnett Bruce, the production will be sung in Italian with English supertitles.
• “The Little Prince,” Jan. 20-28, 2024 • Rachel Portman and Nicholas Wright have adapted Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s story of a prince traveling the universe in search of his beloved Rose and trying to return to his asteroid home. Conducted by Benjamin Manis and directed by Tara Faircloth, the production will be sung in English with English supertitles.
• “The Marriage of Figaro,” March 9-17, 2024 • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “sequel” of sorts to “The Barber of Seville,” features the barber, Figaro, preparing to marry his sweetheart, Susanna, until a scheming count tries to intervene — prompting comical chaos. Conner Gray Covington conducts and Tara Faircloth directs the production, which will be sung in Italian with English subtitles.
• “Thaïs,” May 4-12, 2024 • Set in 4th century Egypt, French composer Olivier Massaien’s work centers on the monk, Athanaël, trying to convert the seductive Thaïs to a life of piety — a situation that becomes complicated when he falls in love with her. American soprano Nicole Heaston is scheduled to sing the title role. Conducted by Steven White and directed by Andrea Cigni, and featuring performers from Repertory Dance Theatre, the production will be sung in French with English supertitles.
